The Founder's Guide to UFRN Verification & Registry Credentials

In an opaque private startup market, trust is the ultimate currency. The UpForge Registry Number (UFRN) is a verified, standardized identification system that validates a startup's legal incorporation, founding team, and key operating metrics for global investors.

The private startup market globally is plagued by a lack of verified information. Unlike public markets, where companies must file audited quarterly reports with regulators like the SEC or SEBI, private startups operate in relative secrecy. This lack of transparency has led to multiple cases of fraudulent valuation metrics, exaggerated customer acquisition figures, and misrepresentations of ultimate beneficial ownership.

UpForge built the UFRN (UpForge Registry Number) framework to solve this trust gap. The UFRN is a unique 14-digit alphanumeric code assigned exclusively to startups that have successfully completed our multi-layered corporate and operational verification audit.

What is a UFRN? Decoding the Structure

A UFRN is not just a random string of numbers. Each component of the 14-digit identifier represents verified structural attributes of the registered startup:

SegmentCharacter RangeRepresentsExample
Registry Identifier1 - 3Indicates the verifying authority (UpForge Global)UFR (UpForge Registry)

The 4 Pillars of the UFRN Verification Audit

To receive a UFRN and a “Verified” badge on UpForge, a startup must pass a thorough verification process divided into four core areas:

1. Legal and Incorporation Verification

Our compliance team audits official government records to verify that the entity is active and in good standing.

In India, this involves validating the Corporate Identification Number (CIN) on the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) portal, checking the registered office address with the Registrar of Companies (ROC), and verifying the directors' DIN records. In the US, we audit state-level Division of Corporations registries (e.g. Delaware, California).

2. Co-Founder and Cap Table Vetting

We verify the identity of the founders using government-issued IDs, professional histories, and board resolutions.

Importantly, we require documentation confirming that the intellectual property (IP) associated with the startup has been legally assigned from the individual founders and contractors to the corporate entity, protecting potential investors from future IP disputes.

3. Operational Metric Attestation

Unlike directories that accept self-reported numbers without proof, UpForge audits the metrics listed on our registry.

Startups must submit redacted screenshots or third-party reports verifying:

  • Funding Raised: Term sheets, bank remittance certificates, or regulatory filings (e.g., Form D in the US or FC-GPR/FHP filings in India).
  • Headcount: Active corporate registry records or payroll management dashboards (such as Deel or RazorpayX Payroll).
  • Product Availability: Live app store links, active customer endpoints, or enterprise contract references.

4. Regulatory Compliance Vetting

We confirm that the startup complies with relevant local regulations, such as the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act 2023 for data privacy, sector-specific rules (like RBI payment licenses), or standard corporate tax filings.

Why Founders are Displaying UFRN Credentials

Having a verified UFRN provides major advantages when operating in the global market:

  1. Instant Legitimacy with International Buyers: If you are a B2B SaaS startup selling to a corporate client in the US or Europe, they want to know you are a real corporate entity. Sharing your UFRN page allows them to instantly view your verified registration data.
  2. Accelerated Investor Due Diligence: Venture capitalists receive hundreds of cold pitches. A pitch deck displaying a verified UFRN tells the investor that the legal entity, cap table foundation, and funding history have already been audited and validated.
  3. Protection Against Spoofing: Startups are increasingly finding competitors copying their websites and brand names to scam clients. A UFRN page acts as a secure, canonical record of your official brand and domain.

“Trust is hard to build but easy to lose. UFRN credentials give honest founders a way to prove their legal and operational legitimacy from day one, level the playing field, and stand out in the global market.” — Lucky Tiwari, Editor-in-Chief

How to Apply for UFRN Verification

The verification process is straightforward and free for genuine startup founders:

  • Step 1: Submit Your Basic Profile: Go to upforge.org/submit and input your startup details, including your corporate domain, category, and location.
  • Step 2: Upload Compliance Documents: Provide your certificate of incorporation, proof of active domain ownership, and identity records for the primary directors.
  • Step 3: Metrics Review: Submit the necessary proof of payroll headcount and funding events.
  • Step 4: Registry Issuance: Once our compliance auditors approve your application, your UFRN is issued and displayed publicly on your registry page.
